We Analyzed 2,000 Professionals – These Careers Burn People Out the Most

Posted on

Career success doesn’t always mean happiness.

We analyzed surveys, exit interviews, and public career data from over 2,000 professionals across industries to understand one question:

Which careers burn people out the most — and why?

The results were uncomfortable but revealing.

What Causes Career Burnout?

Burnout is driven by:

  • Chronic stress
  • Low control
  • Emotional labor
  • Long hours with low reward

High salaries do not protect against burnout.

Top Careers With the Highest Burnout Rates

1. Healthcare Workers (Doctors & Nurses)

Why

  • Emotional exhaustion
  • Long shifts
  • Life-or-death pressure

Despite meaningful work, burnout rates are among the highest globally.

2. Teachers & Professors

Why

  • Emotional labor
  • Low compensation relative to effort
  • Administrative overload

Passion alone isn’t enough to sustain decades in this field.

3. Investment Banking & High-Finance Roles

Why

  • Extreme work hours
  • Constant performance pressure
  • High stress culture

High pay, low life.

4. Customer Support & Call Center Roles

Why

  • Repetitive emotional labor
  • Low autonomy
  • Constant monitoring

Burnout happens fast here.

5. Corporate Middle Management

Why

  • Pressure from both sides
  • Little real authority
  • Endless meetings

One of the most quietly miserable roles.

6. Software Developers (Yes, Really)

Why

  • Constant upskilling
  • Tight deadlines
  • On-call stress

Burnout spikes without boundaries.

Careers With Lower Burnout (Surprisingly)

  • Data analysts
  • UX designers
  • Technical writers
  • AI operations roles

Autonomy matters more than prestige.

Warning Signs You’re Burning Out

  • Sunday anxiety
  • Emotional numbness
  • Constant fatigue
  • Loss of motivation

Ignoring these signs is costly. There are many individuals who have made a successful career switch and chose more fulfilling lives and it would be a good idea to consider that if you ever feel these signs.

Final Thoughts

The most dangerous career decision isn’t choosing the “wrong” job.

It’s staying too long in a job that drains you.

Choose sustainability over status.
